Stephen May

MA, FCSP, Dip MDT, MSc, PhD

Stephen qualified as a physiotherapist in 1990, and worked for many years in a musculoskeletal outpatient setting in primary care in the NHS, in the UK. In 2002 he became a Senior Lecturer in Physiotherapy at Sheffield Hallam University, Sheffield, UK, and a Reader in Physiotherapy in 2013. He completed the Diploma program in Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy (MDT) in 1995, an MSc in Health Services Research and Technology Assessment in 1998, and a PhD in 2008. He is the co-author with Robin McKenzie of The Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy textbooks (2000, 2003, and 2006), a number of chapters in books, and over 60 publications in peer reviewed journals. His research interests are wide ranging, and besides the testing and validation of the MDT system include, reliability of physical examination, patient experience and satisfaction, and systematic reviews. So he has practical experience of both quantitative and qualitative research methodologies.
